Asbestos In Your Home?
Asbestos In Your Home?
Many homeowners have asbestos-containing materials in their homes. A Delaware-licensed inspector should inspect homes for asbestos. If the asbestos-containing material is not in poor condition, it should be kept alone. However, if the material is deteriorating, or will be disturbed during renovation or demolition, it must be removed.
Single-family home owners can do their own work provided that they properly dispose of and package the waste. However, homeowners should use extreme caution when dealing with asbestos-containing materials, and should consider using a licensed remover asbestos abatement contractor for most projects. You can read more about self-removal in How to Remove Cement Asbestos Board siding.
A homeowner may contact the Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) and make arrangements to bring their asbestos-containing material to one of DSWA's transfer stations or landfills. DSWA asks homeowners to contact them 24 hours before bringing asbestos-containing material to their facilities. Other requirements may include completing a DSWA Asbestos Disposal Form. For more information, call the DSWA Citizen Response Line at 1-800-404-78080. The Solid and Hazardous Waste Management Section of DNREC maintains a list certifying waste haulers to transport asbestos. Call the Section at (302)739-9403 to obtain a copy.
